Custom Orthotics

Custom orthotic insoles

What Are Custom Orthotics?

Custom orthotics are medical devices worn inside shoes to support and guide the feet. Unlike over-the-counter insoles, they are designed after a professional evaluation of foot structure, walking mechanics, pressure points, and the condition being treated. They can help the feet function more efficiently and reduce stress on painful joints, tendons, ligaments, and nerves.

3D Scanning Technology

Dr. Suh uses 3D scanning technology to create a precise digital model of the feet. This allows the orthotics to be fabricated to match each patient’s anatomy and address specific biomechanical problems, such as overpronation, arch collapse, heel pressure, or forefoot overload.

How Orthotics Help

Custom orthotics can provide support, improve alignment through the feet and ankles, redistribute pressure away from painful areas, reduce friction points, cushion impact, and improve stability. For some patients, orthotics also reduce stress through the knees, hips, and lower back by improving how the feet contact the ground.

Conditions That May Benefit

Orthotics may be recommended for plantar fasciitis, flat feet, heel pain, Achilles tendinitis, bunions, diabetic foot concerns, neuromas, arthritis, sports injuries, and recurring foot fatigue. They can also be used preventively for patients whose foot mechanics place them at higher risk of injury.

The Orthotics Process

The process typically includes consultation, exam, gait and foot evaluation, 3D scan, fabrication, fitting, and follow-up. Once the orthotics arrive, patients usually go through a short break-in period so the feet can adjust gradually.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are custom orthotics different from store-bought inserts?

Custom orthotics are prescribed and built specifically for your feet and diagnosis, while store-bought inserts are generic.

How long do orthotics last?

Many orthotics last several years with proper care, though lifespan depends on materials, use, activity level, and shoe type.

Do orthotics fix flat feet permanently?

They do not usually change bone structure, but they can reduce symptoms and improve function.
